The Sage (NPC Class)


A Sage is combination alchemist and lore master that relies upon his training and intelligence to get by in the world. Some sages become shopkeepers, selling alchemical items, spell components, magical foci and all manner of trinkets. Others eschew alchemy in favor of making a living advising others.

Cantrips
At first level, you may choose 4 cantrips from any spell list that contains cantrips. As you gain levels, you learn more cantrips from any list. See Chapter 10 in the PHB for the general rules on using cantrips.

Sagecraft: Alchemy
Beginning at first level, you know how to make the alchemical items listed in the table below. To make an item, you must have access to a stable workbench in an area free of distractions, the proper Tool, and spend the gold piece value listed under Cost to cover raw materials.

1: Smokestick: When lit, creates an effect identical to a Fog Cloud spell save that the effect lasts at most 1 minute (or less, if dispersed by winds. See the spell) and the area of effect is a single, 10ft cube. Smokesticks sell for 2 gp each and are effectively weightless
2: Sunrod: When struck sharply, the gold tip on this 1ft, 2 lb metal rod glows as brightly as a torch for 6 hours. It then burns out and becomes useless. Sunrods sell for 2gp each.

Your skill provides you with a Comfortable lifestyle (see pg 158 in the PHB) provided you work each day and have access to the tools of your profession.

Sagecraft: Lore Expertise
Choose one of the following skills in which you are already proficient: Arcana, Investigation, History, Medicine, Nature, Religion. Gain a +2 bonus in this skill. You cannot choose Lore Expertise for the same skill more than once.

Sagecraft: Basic Ritual Magic
Choose four rituals from the below list. You may use these rituals as if you were a wizard of the appropriate level. See Chapter 10 for information on Ritual Magic.

Sagecraft: New Lore
Choose one of the following skills in which you not yet proficient: History, Medicine, Nature, Religion. Gain proficiency in that skill.

Sagecraft:Steadfast Servant
You gain access to the Unseen Servant ritual if you do not already have it. When you cast this ritual, the duration of the effect becomes 1 day (24 hours).

Sagecraft: Advanced Ritual Magic
Choose two rituals from the below list and two rituals from the Basic Ritual Magic list above.You may use these rituals as if you were a wizard of the appropriate level. See Chapter 10 for information on Ritual Magic.

Gentle Repose

Sagecraft: Alchemical Expertise
The cost to create items on the Alchemy table above is reduced by 2 gold per item (to a minimum of 1 gold per item). Additionally, you can product twice the listed number of items of a given type per day.
