Starting Spells
- Spellcasters using a spellbook begin play with as many spells in their spell book as they are able to memorize. The Referee may choose these spells or may allow the player to select
Adding Spells
Casters using a spellbook will naturally want to have access to as many spells as possible. Here are some ways spellcasters can add spells to their spellbook:
- Gain a level: spellcasters add one spell for each new spell slot they gained. The spell(s) added must be of the same level or lower to the slot(s) they gained
- Another Spellcaster: spellcasters can negotiate with another caster to learn spells from their spellbook. The caster receiving the spell must be of sufficient level to cast the new spell
- Arcane Scroll: spellcasters can copy the spell into their spellbook. This destroys the spell on the scroll. The caster transcribing the spell must be of sufficient level to cast the new spell
- Captured Spellbook: spellcasters can decipher a captured spellbook by use of the Read Magic spell. The caster transcribing the spell must be of sufficient level to cast the new spell
- Magical Research: The caster can scribe any researched spells into their spellbook
Cost of Adding Spells
- Spells added by gaining a level or from Magical Research are added to the caster's spellbook at no cost and take no time
- Spells acquired from any other means cost 50sp per level of the spell being transcribed and take 1 day per level of the spell to transcribe
Resilience
- Spellbooks are specially-constructed books (this is why they cost and weigh more than the typical 'blank book') and use special inks
- Spellbooks are typically held tightly shut by one or more clasps and/or straps and use water-resistant vellum to hold the spells. Submerging a Spellbook, at least for a brief time, will not damage it
- The Spellbook's pages are resistant to tearing, fading and fire damage
- Spellbooks are stitched-bound with thick, specially-treated hides. This makes them exceptionally resistant to cutting, flame or other incidental damage
Lost or Duplicating Spellbooks
- Spellbooks can be recovered or duplicated by their owner at a cost of 50sp per spell level and 1 day per spell level for each spell level to be recovered
